Carbon Farming

Carbon pricing is subject to ongoing debate and uncertainty in Australia. However the Commonwealth’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) is one aspect of carbon pricing that does enjoy broad political support. The CFI provides opportunities for land owners to generate income from land based activities that capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide. An example of one such activity is allowing previously cleared native vegetation to regenerate. Leichardt Group has worked extensively with several CFI stakeholders including project proponents, methodology developers, regulators and investors to identify and implement land based CFI projects.

Being a relatively new opportunity, the implementation process for CFI projects is evolving and may appear quite confusing and demanding to new participants.  Leichardt Group is experienced in all aspects of CFI project management, including;

  • Analysing land eligibility and carbon yield estimates
  • Drafting workable landholder agreements
  • Obtaining state government consents
  • Obtaining mortgagee consents
  • Surveying of carbon abatement interests
  • Registration of carbon abatement interests on title
  • Submitting project applications to the Clean Energy Regulator (CER)

CFI Methodologies provide the definitive rules for determining what classes of carbon abatement are eligible to be credited by CFI projects.  Developing viable methodologies that will obtain the approval of regulators is a specialised task requiring a high level of scientific knowledge, together with a sound understanding of land management practices.  Leichardt Group has extensive experience working with both proponents and regulators in the development of CFI methodologies.

Demonstrating the feasibility of CFI projects requires a good working knowledge of carbon abatement modelling tools, as well as a sound understanding of the economics of any competing or complementary land uses.  Leichardt Group’s broad range of skills in the fields of agricultural production, vegetation management, property valuation, and carbon yield estimation make us ideally equipped to undertake feasibility analyses for potential project participants including investors, project proponents and landholders.
